SYNOPSIS OF THE DINING ROOM
The Dining Room - a comedy by A.R. Gurney

Seeking six strong theatrical actors--three men and three women--who will play a combined total of 57 characters. Each actor will take on multiple characters, and play a wide range of ages and personalities.

The play, set in a series of dining rooms in upper middle class households, is a romp through some five decades of American family values and traditions. It weaves a mosaic of 18 overlapping vignettes - both funny and touching. The actors portray multiple roles and a wide variety of characters, from eight to eighty - misbehaving little boys to stern grandfathers to giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids. Each vignette introduces a new set of people and events; a father lectures his son on grammar and politics; a boy returns from boarding school to discover his mother's infidelity; a senile grandmother doesn't recognize her own sons at Christmas dinner; a daughter, her marriage in shambles, pleads to return home, etc. Scenes move swiftly through time and character to create an entertaining theatrical experience of humor and compassion. It is an actor's playground!
